Our Story
Shire Valley Kalondolondo Programme was founded to address a critical gap in Malawi: the lack of locally-led advocacy for sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), particularly around post-abortion care. We recognized that women and girls in Nkhotakota and Thyolo districts needed more than information—they needed a trusted, local organization that understood their communities and could advocate for their rights.
Our vision is simple but powerful: every woman and girl in our communities has the knowledge, support, and rights needed to make informed decisions about their reproductive health and futures. We believe that SRHR is a human right, and that communities themselves—not outsiders—are the best leaders of change.
Rooted in Community
We are deeply embedded in Nkhotakota and Thyolo. Our team understands local context, speaks the language of trust, and builds relationships that last.
Women-Centered & Empowering
Every decision we make is guided by the voices and needs of the women and girls we serve. We center their leadership and agency.
Integrated Approach
We combine advocacy, direct services, and development support to create sustainable change. One strategy alone isn't enough.
With support from AmplifyChange, we are strengthening our capacity to advance SRHR advocacy in Malawi. This partnership affirms what we know: locally-led organizations are the future of social change.
We exist because women deserve better. We work because change is possible.
How We Work
We combine three core components—advocacy, direct services, and development support—to create lasting change in sexual and reproductive health and rights across Nkhotakota and Thyolo.
Advocacy for Health & Rights
We amplify women's voices and challenge barriers to reproductive health and rights. Through community mobilization, policy advocacy, and health system engagement, we work to ensure women have access to information, services, and the power to make decisions about their own bodies and futures.
- • Reproductive health advocacy and access
- • Women's rights and gender equality
- • Community mobilization and movement-building
Direct Services & Support
We provide essential services that women need. Post-abortion care is central to our work—offering medical support, counseling, and contraceptive information to women who have experienced abortion. We work with health systems to improve care quality and reduce stigma.
- • Post-abortion care advocacy and services
- • Health information and counseling
- • Health system partnership and strengthening
Development Support
We help communities and organizations plan, implement, and monitor their own development work. Through strategic planning, implementation support, and monitoring systems, we strengthen the capacity of local organizations to achieve their goals and measure their impact.
- • Development planning and strategy
- • Implementation support and training
- • Monitoring, evaluation, and learning
An Integrated Approach
These three components don't work in isolation—they strengthen each other. Advocacy creates the policy environment and community momentum for change. Direct services meet immediate needs and build trust with communities. Development support ensures that organizations can sustain their work and continuously improve.
When a woman needs post-abortion care, she benefits from our direct services. But that same interaction feeds into advocacy—her story helps us understand barriers in the health system that need to change. Organizations we support with development services become stronger advocates themselves, amplifying the reach of our work.
This integration means we're not just responding to problems—we're building the conditions for lasting, community-led change in sexual and reproductive health and rights.
Community-Led Solutions
We don't work for communities—we work with them. Women and girls in Nkhotakota and Thyolo lead our work. They define the problems, design the solutions, and hold us accountable. This approach ensures that our work is rooted in real community needs and builds local leadership and ownership.
Evidence & Learning
We ground our work in evidence—research, data, and lessons from the field. We monitor and evaluate what we do, learn from results, and adjust our approach. This commitment to evidence and continuous learning helps us improve our impact and contribute to the broader movement for sexual and reproductive health and rights in Malawi.
Part of a Broader Movement
We don't work alone. We're part of a growing movement of locally-led organizations advancing sexual and reproductive health and rights across Malawi and beyond. Through collaboration with other advocacy organizations, health systems, research institutions, and funders like AmplifyChange, we contribute to a stronger, more coordinated push for change.
Our work in Nkhotakota and Thyolo is part of this broader movement—building local leadership, strengthening organizations, and creating the conditions for women and girls to claim their rights and access the health services they deserve.
What We Stand For
The Shire Valley Kalondolondo Programme is rooted in core commitments that guide every decision we make and every community we serve. These values shape how we work, what we advocate for, and how we measure success.
Women's Rights & Gender Equality
We believe women and girls deserve full autonomy over their bodies, futures, and choices. Gender equality isn't optional—it's foundational to health and dignity.
Sexual & Reproductive Health as a Human Right
Access to reproductive health information, services, and care is a fundamental human right, not a privilege. Every person deserves respectful, quality care.
Community Leadership & Local Solutions
Communities know their own needs best. We listen, follow their lead, and build solutions rooted in local knowledge and lived experience.
Equity & Access to Care
We work to remove barriers—poverty, geography, stigma, language—that keep women and girls from accessing the care and information they need.
Transparency & Accountability
We're honest about what we do, how we do it, and the results we achieve. We answer to the communities we serve and the values we uphold.
Evidence-Based Advocacy & Decision-Making
We ground our work in research, data, and evidence. We listen to what works, adapt when needed, and share what we learn with others.
